A fractured skull is where one or more of the bones of the skull are fractured.  The whole group of bones that make up the head is considered the skull.  The cranium is the part of the skull that protects the brain and consists of eight bones.  The second part of the skull is the group of numerous bones of the facial skeleton.

Types of skull fracture

There are three types of basic fractures of the skull.  The first one is called a linear fracture and is the most common of the fractures.  This is usually a small crack on the skull and is considered the least serious.  The second one is a comminuted fracture which is where the skull is broken into several pieces and some of the pieces can stick into the brain tissue.  This is more serious and will require surgery.  Last and least common is the basilar fracture where the bones at the base of the skull fracture.  This fracture requires severe force to occur.  In all cases of a fractured skull it’s important to discover if brain damage has occurred.  When blood vessels in the head are damaged from the fractured skull there can be a substantial amount of blood present.

Causes of a fractured skull are:

  • Severe blow to the head
  • Falls
  • Automobile accident

Symptoms of a fractured skull:

  • An open cut on the skin by the skull
  • Dilated pupils
  • Limited consciousness
  • A headache
  • State of confusion

Treatment of a fractured skull

The treatment for a fractured skull varies greatly depending on the type of the fracture.  If there are open wounds, these are always cleaned.  A conscious patient will be monitored for hours before they will be released to go home.  In more severe fractures such as with the comminuted fracture, a procedure will be done to rid of any of the fragmented skull.  This is done to eliminate further damage, infections, and possible swelling on the brain.    Antibiotics may be administered to help with infection and blood transfusions may be necessary if large blood vessels were damaged allowing substantial blood loss.  A person may be monitored to see if pressure on the brain occurs.  It’s possible that blood will need to be removed that settles in the area between the skull and the brain.  Strong medicines can be given to reduce the swelling of the brain or holes can be drilled into the skull to drain the blood.
