hi I've had a basic bank account with the cooperative for about 5 years now. I tried to open 3 children's accounts recently but after some problems with paperwork not getting to the appropriate people they turned me down!!!! I requested my credit file from credit expert and found my score was fairly good, (it said there wasn't really many people above fairly good), and the report itself was clear, no bad debts, no late payments. I have asked the cooperative bank to look again and have sent them my report. Can anyone suggest whats this all about? They are only childrens bank accounts and I have cheques (from there late father) waiting to go into an account . (these cheques also run out in June). If they come back and turn me down again can anyone suggest a bank account I am not likely to have problems in opening , perhaps where they are not so strict that you have to have a score above such and such.

Lloyds TSB children accounts are easy to open no credit check or anything - I don't know why they would credit check for a childs account anyway??
All i did was take in my sons birth certificate and something with my address on it - account was opened there and then and the cheques I had to deposit were done as well

I really don't know why you should find it difficult to open a kid's savings account. There are plenty of types of kids' accounts and you will find it easy to open an account of your choice in any reputed bank. Moreover, some banks even offer gift vouchers and incentives. Everything in the interests of inculcating the right money management skills in the child.

I guess this issue really matters because of the minority of the child. And I think it depends on the banks policy. Try to look for some bank who doesn't have a strict policy regarding opening bank accounts most especially involving children.

I think you should read the provisions for opening bank accounts in the Cooperative. I know that account holders should be members of the cooperative, and maybe your children are not old enough to be considered as members. My suggestion is for you to open a bank account for your children in one of the reputable banks, and then transfer the accounts to the cooperative when you have sorted it out with them. Rather than wait for the checks to run out, that is.
