A broken foot can occur in many different places. There are 26 small bones in the foot, which means that there are 26 opportunities for a fracture. The tarsus consists of seven bones that make up the mid and hind foot area, which are known as tarsals. The forefoot has five metatarsals and 14 phalanges, including two in the big toe and three in each small toe. Metatarsal fractures are the most common type of fracture that happens in the foot, but any bone can be broken with the wrong event or activity.

Causes of a broken foot include:

  • any excessive pressure or unnatural movement of the bones-Falling
  • Objects falling on the foot
  • Direct impact
  • Collisions, such as auto accidents
  • Twists or severe, sudden movements that aren’t natural
  • Stress fractures that can turn into larger fractures
  • Sports Injuries

Symptoms of a broken foot

Symptoms of a broken foot are similar to other broken bones, and include the following:

  • Severe pain or moderate pain
  • Bruising, swelling, tenderness
  • Numbness, either in the foot or the toes
  • Limited mobility or range of motion
  • Pain or discomfort when walking
  • Lumps and other deformities on the foot

Treatment for a broken foot

When a broken foot is suspected, the person should immediately seek medical treatment. A doctor will do a physical examination and then do x-rays of the suspected broken foot to help the doctor determine where the break is, how severe it is, and the best course of treatment. Once the severity is determined, the treatment will be prescribed and can include putting the bone back into place, and then keeping the bones together while the injury heals. This can be done with surgery or through non-surgical methods. In some cases, stiff-soled shoes will suffice. Other patients might need splints or casts to handle a minor fracture.

A severe broken foot might require surgery to put the bones back into place, and could require plates, screws, or pins to help hold things in place during the healing process. As time heals the wound, it will be monitored to ensure that the bones aren’t shifting. Physical therapy and exercise will help to restore the range of motion and the strength to the foot after injury. When a broken foot occurs, healing time takes 3-6 weeks in the smaller metatarsals and phalanges, while tarsal bones are bigger and can take 6-10 weeks to heal completely.
