What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is composed of fibrous mineral silicates of different chemical compositions. When inhaled, asbestos fibers settle deep in the lungs, causing scars. Asbestos inhalation can also cause the two layers of membrane covering the lungs to thicken This is often referred to as pleural plaques.

Inhaling asbestos fibers can occasionally cause fluid to accumulate in the space between the pleural layers of the lungs (pleural space). This is known as noncancerous asbestos effusion.

Asbestos can also cause cancer in the pleura, called mesothelioma, or in the membranes of the abdomen, called peritoneal mesothelioma. Asbestos can also cause lung cancer.

Workers at risk of Asbestosis

Workers who demolish buildings that have insulation containing asbestos are at an increased risk of developing the aforementioned diseases.  Workers in many other industries, such as carpenters, electricians, builders, power plant workers, merchant seamen, etc may also have been exposed  The frequency of a persons exposure to asbestos fibres determines the risk of that individual developing an asbestos-related disease.

Symptoms of Asbestosis

Symptoms of asbestosis appear only after large areas of the lung become scarred. The first symptoms are a mild shortness of breath and a decreased ability to exercise. In about 15 % of people, severe shortness of breath and repiratory failure develop. Those suffering from mesothelioma will likely experience pain in the chest and shortness of breath.
